Thaen Mittai / Sugar Candy

December 4, 2014 by Suki 20 Comments

ThaenMittai-9

ThaenMittai-9This dainty sweet just melts in your mouth.

Β Thaen is honey and Mittai is sweet. But these were not made with honey. They are called so because they are as sweet as honey.Β  :tounge:

These are popular in petty shops (Potti kadai) in India. These are finger licking desserts that anyone will love when they have it. My dad never gets me any food items from road side shops. He would have had this many times but he never wants to get these for me πŸ˜‰ because he believes that these are not healthy for me πŸ˜€ . But I had them once πŸ˜€ Sadly only once πŸ™ Β . My close friend Jo when she came back from vacation got me these. And I loved it. We finished one packet of these delicious ones in an hour. πŸ˜€

When I asked her about what sweets to make πŸ˜‰ she gave me a list and I picked this from that! πŸ˜€ She was as excited as me when I told her that I will make these. :O Surely will make these ones when she visits me!! πŸ˜‰

Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: Indian
Prep time:  120 mins
Cook time:  20 mins
Total time:  2 hours 20 mins
Serves: 20

Ingredients
  • Rice – ½ cup ( I used idli rice)
  • Whole Urad dal – 2 tbsp
  • Food Colour – 1 tsp, Orange red colour
  • Oil – for Deep frying
  • Sugar Syrup:
  • Sugar – Β½ cup
  • Water – 2 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder – 1tsp
  • baking powder - a pinch
  • Sugar – 2tsp (to coat)
Instructions
  1. Soak rice and whole urad dal in water for three hours.
  2. Blend them into a smooth paste. Add food color, baking powder to the batter. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Boil the water in a large bottom pot and add the sugar and cardamom powder to it. Boil them till they reach one thread consistency or thicker consistency. Switch off and set aside.

Grilled Peach and Pecan Walnut Crumble

September 6, 2014 by Suki 2 Comments

Peach_crumble_Relishthebite_name2

Peach_crumble_Relishthebite_name2It was really hot yesterday for us in Montreal. And I wanted to have something to cool it. πŸ˜€ Reason to have icecream πŸ˜‰ ! Summer and Peach ice-cream crumble are made for each other, I should say. It is a straightforward recipe and mouthwatering :D. Ten minutes baking is required. You can even do this without baking. You can top this crumble with any fruit you fancy πŸ˜€

I used walnut and pecan. You can just use even one of them on your recipe. This recipe is simple and really tasty. You can have just the fruits and crumble. Or you can serve this with ice cream. But personally I feel the fruit combo with ice cream gives a exceptional taste. You can store this crumble on an airtight container for a week.

GRILLED PEACH AND WALNUT PECAN CRUMBLE
Author: Suganya Hariharan
Recipe type: Dessert
Prep time:  5 mins
Cook time:  25 mins
Total time:  30 mins
Serves: 6

Ingredients
  • Peach – 4
  • Maple syrup
  • Brown sugar – 4 tbsp
  • Cinnamon – 1 tsp
  • Walnuts – Β½ cup
  • Pecans – Β½ cup
  • Flour – 4 tsp
  • Oats – 1 tsp
  • Salt – a pinch
  • Butter – 2 tbsp
  • Icecream – I used French vanilla, use whatever you like
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F
  2. Mix the walnuts, pecans, flour, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt. Pulse them once in a blender or use a roller to blend them into a coarse texture. Don’t make them smooth. It will spoil the crumble.
  3. Mix the butter and oats to it. Keep it aside
  4. Grease your baking pan with oil and place the crumble mixture to it. And place it in oven for ten minutes.
  5. Remove from oven after ten mins.
  6. Meanwhile, slice your peaches, mis them with maple syrup and Β½ tsp of cinnamon. Grill for few minutes on each side.
  7. Serve the peaches with some crumble and scoop of ice cream. The way I served them was some crumble, then grilled peaches, ice-cream, some crumble, grilled peach,, scoop of icecream and crumble on top.
Notes
1. Crumble can be stored at room temperature for a week.
2. You can use any fruits, icecream you fancy.
